The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for the Mechanical Engineering Department Chair position with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2023.
Candidates must be qualified for the appointment at the rank of Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and have a strong track record in publications and attracting research funding from diverse sources. Evidence of scientific and organizational leadership, educational innovation, outstanding communication abilities, and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives (DEI) is essential. A demonstrated track record of excellence in administrative effectiveness is preferred.
The Mechanical Engineering faculty has built strong interdisciplinary research and educational programs on the foundation of core mechanical engineering disciplines and provides a first-class education while engaging in research at the frontiers of knowledge. The Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering will promote and actively work with the faculty to realize this departmental vision of academic leadership and excellence, and will represent the Department to the academic community, industry, and government. The Chair will actively work with faculty in the Department and across the University to identify and pursue innovations in research, education, and service. This individual will lead the Department and the College in strategic planning in the above context. The College is undergoing a growth phase in terms of faculty and facilities. The Chair is also responsible for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the Department, College and University.
The Department faculty’s strong commitment and contributions to research and education are well recognized nationally and internationally. Annual research expenditures are approximately $7 Million. Research strengths are in broad areas of advanced manufacturing, aerospace, biomechanics, combustion, control, design, dynamics, energy, fluid dynamics, machine learning, robotics, solid mechanics, sustainability, and thermal transport, among others.
